From Cage to Convertable

Honey Bear

We just added a new member to our family, Honey Bear. No, we didn't name her that, but I believe she knows her name, so we may be stuck with it. We've only had her a few hours and we've already fallen in love. She's a friendly, lovable golden retriever who gets along well with our other dogs and loves riding with the top down in our convertible.

Three-year-old Honey Bear was given up by her family when a new baby entered the home and they couldn't take care of her. As my daughter and I walked through the shelter, we spotted walls and walls of other dogs in tiny jail cells. These unwanted dogs weren't lucky enough to have a new home to go to. Some barked while others slept, but they all looked like they wanted out. When the employee let Honey Bear out of her cell, she went nuts. She darted laps around the outdoor area while wagging her feathered tail.

Honey Bear
I wish we could have taken the whole lot of them. It breaks my heart to see so many dogs that no one wants, but this is not the only prison for the homeless. In our search for Honey Bear, we visited the Memphis Humane Society. Many of those dogs are free to anyone who will have them due to an angel grant.

Millie
Three years ago we adopted Millie, a terrier mix, who has been so grateful to have a home. These rescue dogs are even sweeter than other dogs because somehow they know what their new owners have done for them. So why not? Go out to your nearest pound and bring home a friend. A furry friend is waiting for you.

So glad to hear that Honey Bear found a happy home with you. That's so heartwarming. So true that there are too many unwanted animals out there. We have seven pets, three cats, and four dogs, all strays or giveaways. I cannot see the point in buying a pet when there are so many unwanted ones crying out for a home.

Congratulations on your new addition. Honey Bear is beautiful. Animals always know when you've taken them in after their time at a shelter, and they love you so much more because of it. We have two adopted shelter cats who are just the same way (though in their own feline, I'm-going-to-ignore-you way :) I hope Honey Bear and Millie get along. Good luck with the new pretty girl.

Honey Bear is a beauty. Why not just drop the Bear portion of her name? If she's anything like our Baby Cat, she responds to the first word rather than the combination. She looks very happy in her new home!

Thanks for the visits. Dropping "Bear" makes sense, but she doesn't respond to Honey, only Honey Bear, go figure? I'm getting used to the name, so it's not bothering me anymore.

We also have a 12½ year old golden who is not a rescue dog. He has an appointment at the vet to have multiple tests run. They suspect a heart condition. Scary. I'm very worried about him and how Millie would react if something happened, so we wanted to get a new golden while we still have our old one.

I admire you for expanding your family via rescue dogs. I'd do the same for cats, if I had my way. Sadly, I think the family would disown me if I added any more to our clan of five cats :)

Honey Bear is one lucky dog! She is going to a home where she will be loved and cared for. Absolutely wonderful!

I used to rescue dogs and horses in my former life. Time and circumstance has taken me down a different path, but I miss those days of getting a phone call that started..."Hey, there's this dog..."

Liv and I are animal lovers. :-) We have rescued more cats than I care to count for fear of being called a "cat lady." Liv just had a birthday party two weeks ago. We are so blessed with so many things. She decided that instead of presents, she wanted her guests to bring donations of toys and "fun stuff" for our local animal shelter. We went yesterday to drop it all off - and I could not have been more proud of my girl. :-)
