Silly Sunday: Big Famous Rocks

Years ago, my sister, brother-in-law, Rhonda, and I left Boston and drove south for an hour to get a taste of our historical heritage by seeing the one and only Plymouth Rock. Once near the fabulous site, a foofaraw gathered around fancy smancy columns surrounding what must have been the greatest tourist attraction ever. Visiting Plymouth Rock was like the Peanuts Halloween special. After all of the excitement  and anticipation of trick-or-treating, Charlie Brown opened his bag and said, "I got a rock." I know how he felt. I don't know why I expected Plymouth Rock to be anything different from the million of other stones on the ground just because someone chiseled a year on it. Sorry, but my recommendation is to save your gasoline.

Here is a photo from some tourist site since a picture wasn't worth the film.

Years later, I was lucky enough to visit another famous rock, the Blarney Stone in Ireland. Legend says that if one kisses this giant rock, one will be given the gift of gab. As you know, I need that; however, I didn't kiss the Blarney stone. The night before heading to Cork, I overheard a conversation between a few locals in a pub. These youths laughed hysterically about how they and their young friends loved to visit the Blarney stone late at night. The stunt consisted of breaking onto the grounds, scaling the walls of the Castle, and pissing on the Blarney Stone before the puckering tourists arrived. You kissed it, didn't you? Ha! Now you have something to gab about.

Since visiting these two tourist attractions didn't work as planned, I've got to check out some more famous rocks. How about the Rosetta Stone? Maybe I could visit the Rock of Gibraltar? Who wants to go with me? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Hahaha! Funny post; especially the story about the Blarney Stone. Would love to see the Rock of Gibralter, myself.

Really funny post! Now the Rock of Gibralter would be a little more impressive if only for its size. Besides, it's got apes on it, and it's also known as the Pillars of Hercules, and I write books about the Hercules myths. And seeing the Rosetta Stone would be like visiting a shrine for people who love language!

It's just a rock? No neon or anything? What a disappointment!

LOL - I so remember that day and that moment of disappointment and wonder. Rock of Gibraltar - watch out for the monkeys, and have already been to British Museum - so find another interesting rock and I am in - Golden Rock in Burma? Mushroom Rock in Egypt? Ayers Rock in Australia?
Thanks for the mention.

You hit the nail on the head about Plymouth Rock! I live about 10 minutes from there and I can never understand why it's such a big draw. Ok, well I can understand why it's a draw, but it's a disappointment to EVERYONE I've ever met. Maybe back when it was huge or something, but now it's just a little chip of the original rock.

Well, you just shattered my dreams of kissing the Blarney Stone! I still want to visit it, but I guess there is no way in hell now that I'll be putting my lips on it.

I kind of felt the same visiting the Grand Canyon. True, it is so breathtaking to see, but after about 5 minutes I was ready to go. It was like, Ok, I came, I saw, now let's move on.

Sorry Plymouth Rock was such a disappointment. I would love to visit Ireland, and I'm glad that you heard the story before you visited the Blarney stone! Happy New Year! Julie

I've heard of Plymouth Rock before but never seen it. So that's it??? I isn't even that big 'cos I expected it to be some kind of 30' monster jutting out over the edge of a cliff or something like that. I too am disappointed Joyce.

So funny! I agree, but it's kind of like "build it and they will come" (although no one builds a rock)!

Somewhere in Scotland is the oldest rock in the world. Wanted to see it after hearing about it from Hubby, a geologist wannabe. I KNOW we passed by it, but we saw no signs and no mention was made of it by the Aegis rangers who were our tour guides. But we saw lots of other interesting rocks, including standing stones and stones used to make beds and tables in the houses at Skara Brae. Anyway, thanks for the warning about Plymouth. Some of my ancestors landed there, but now I won't waste my time traveling half-way across the country to look at it. : - )

Funny! I think there are a lot of tourist spots like that, they just aren't as exciting as all the hype :)
