#WW: Sad News

Judy Haughton-James
Missing your thoughts from a Twinless Twin.
We love you.
RIP

Judy left us on January 1, 2014. Although I never met her personally, I enjoyed visiting her blog and having her come see me. There is a definite hole in the blogsphere without her.
Had I not read Callie J'American Spice's post, I would have continued wondering where she's been. Here's the sad answer to all of our questions.

Dogwood Loves Dogs

Hello, peeps! I know I usually post Wordless Wednesday pictures on Tuesday nights, but I'm so excited to tell you about my school, that I figured I'd go ahead and spread my story right now. I'm participating in Fenced in by Love's Campaign to find the organization of the year that makes a difference in surrounding dogs with tenderness and affection.

Although Dogwood Elementary School's mascot is the dolphin, maybe it should
Ms. Pittman gives treat to Penny
be the dog for there's no
shortage of love for these furry animals at this school in Germantown, Tennessee. For the past two years, dogs who accompany their kids to school receive a tasty treat and multiple pats on the head through the car window. These same dogs can gobble up a second goody at the end of the school day.

This Dogwood tradition provides a fun human/animal connection for fourth and fifth grade safety patrol members, staff working the car line, and the dogs as well. The kids eagerly watch the cars to see if Cookie or Max will be pulling in soon. When the dogs arrive, students must learn compromising skills for determining who will be the lucky kid to give out a treat. The kids know all the dogs by name and what kind of car they will arrive in. As a staff member, I too enjoy visiting with our fur babies. I've especially enjoyed watching one puppy triple in size.

Kona
Many parents have reported stories about their dogs waiting at the door to go to school on Monday morning, as if they instinctively know the week end is over. Our snow day (or rather freezing rain day) proved to be a huge disappointment for Penny, the dog pictured above, without her twice daily visit to school. She arrives each morning with a puddle of drool dripping down the side of the van. Although her owner must constantly wipe the side of her car, she still brings our friend to school. Penny even brought donuts to car lane workers to celebrate Christmas one December morning.

Kona at Work
Dogwood Elementary School also enjoys a therapy dog on Wednesdays. Kona has been certified as a therapy dog and as a reading dog. He tries to visit school each week to allow special education students to read to him, as well as some struggling readers. The children light up at the chance to read to Kona. His services also provided a popular auction item at the fund raiser because every kid wants a chance to read to Kona.

So what's next for Dogwood? Get this: Hollywood Feed Pet Store plans to donate the biscuits for the dogs and two aprons with treat pockets for the lucky school auction winners who will get to feed biscuits to our friends during the morning drop off. This should be a great way to continue the dog love at Dogwood Elementary School.

Sick of No Snow

I'm sick of no snow. The white stuff never sticks to the ground or whitens our world. We peer out the
window at drab, weedy grass. Every night, the news reports of the massive snow storms across the country, but nobody talks about us. The snow swept north across Missouri and blanketed Atlanta to the south. Even the Sunshine state saw white. It's as if there's a little ring of nothing surrounding Memphis, Tennessee.

It's the same pattern over and over again. Cold enough to change precipitation into a powdery white, but noooooo. Our skies are as dry as Gun Barrel City, Texas on a Sunday morning. As soon as the temperature rises above freezing, rain pounds the city. In fact, it pounded so hard at 33º, we figured it would ice over at night and keep us out of school. Ya think? The temp rose to the forties until all moisture was gone. Now, we're down to 23º. What's in store for the week?

Cold enough to snow if it weren't for the sun symbol peaking out behind the clouds. When the temps drop that low, we might as well get snow and stay home. Precipitation will return as soon as the temperature warms up, and I will have to go to work another day.

It's not just kids who dream of snow days.

But wait . . .
driving home from work tonight, I saw a few flurries.

It's already stopped, and this isn't pretty. :(

Test

I think my feed hadn't been sending out new posts. I just followed an idea from The Botchars to change my feed because it may have reached maximum size allowance.

Did you get this post?

If not, what brought you here. Thanks for responding. I hope this works!

Operation Smile and Rentback Books

I recently learned about an organization called Operation Smile that provides surgeries for children born with facial abnormalities, such as cleft palate. The problems of the cleft palate go deeper than just the social stigma of looking different than one's peers. Ten percent of these children die before their first birthdays. Those who live often face problems such as not being able to eat, speak, smile, or socialize. This wonderful organization provides medical treatments in the form of paying for costly surgeries that these kids' parents wouldn't be able to provide on their own.

Fifty-three medical volunteers recently completed a mission to Guatemala City where they provided surgeries to 149 children. In order to make these life-altering procedures possible, Hospital Militar donated five sanitized rooms for the week.

While there, team members were inspired by two-year-old David's mother's fussing over her child before the doctors put him under anesthesia. Love speaks every language. The biggest surprise of this mission was how smooth everything ran. It must be awe-inspiring to witness so many good deed doers at once making dreams come true.

They were not the only ones helping this to happen. Many people and organizations provide funding for Operation Smile. One such organization is Rentback Books. For each text book that you rent, Rentback will donate money to Operation Smile. This way, you can enjoy the satisfaction of getting school textbooks at a good price while solving a world problem.

Here's a video to show how they work.

Some perks are:
-save 40-90% off of bookstore prices
-free shipping both ways
-can highlight in the textbooks
-flexible renting periods
-we donate to Operation Smile with each textbook rented

#WW: I'm a Hater!

I'll admit it. I'm one of those Beiber haters. I know he's just a kid, but a rude annoying one at that. He spat on his fans, made arrogant and disgusting comments at Ann Frank's house,  urinated in a restaurant mop bucket, and called a bikini clad girl crushing on him a beached whale. This is just a small sampling of his bad behavior. Yes, he's just a nineteen-year-old punk, but that's old enough to know douchiness from decency. He deserves every photo I post!

I cain't stan' 'im!

First there was the chase

Next came the arrest

And finally the booking where the arrogant jerk smiled wide for his police mug shot. Doesn't he get what a screw up he is?? Someone needs to seriously slap that kid

. . . and Miley Cyrus, too!

The Blogging Lounge Photo Prompt: Rock Star

From the first time I strummed my Lil Tykes guitar, I knew I wanted to be a rock star, and it didn't end there. Come elementary school, the neighborhood kids and me formed our band in the front yard. We banged pots, pans, and anything else to make our music. From there, we played high school gigs and  dressed our way to fame.

Kids love our hair dye job. Each one of us has a unique color and style that makes an awesome rainbow when we get together. Ty's balloon shaped hair glows as red as Ronald the clown, while Keifer goes for neon blue feathers. Suse shines yellow sunbeams, while I grow the green leafy look. It came in handy today.

The old saying, "Watch what you wish for" is true. I wanted to be a star. Each night, I dreamed of being swooned over by an audience. But, no one told me how nuts our fan base would be.

See, after we left stage this morning, a group of loose screws chased our limo. The driver swerved, we hit a wall, and the fans tore our doors off.

All I could do was run. I headed to a nearby farm and ducked into this old wheelbarrow. As I hide in here, everyone will think my hair is a plant. I just hope those druggies don't pull out my locks and try to smoke me.

Hey, Hey, I don't want to be a pop star!
