#GBE2: Dreams

I Dream of Jeannie
The work was completed and the research paper turned in, so we visited the comedy club for drinks and fun. The comedian on stage asked if anyone was celebrating anything. I told him I'd finished my master's paper. After a short pause he said, "I Dream of Jeannie! Get Jeannie a free drink."

Nothing like retro TV to bring back fun memories, but why did Astronaut Nelson dream of Jeanie? Jeannie got him in the most trouble when he was awake.

Like that would happen!

My guess would be the sad situation of a girl calling her man "Master." After all, isn't every man's dream to have someone as beautiful as Barbara Eden ready to grant his wishes? Of course, if Major Nelson were a real person (instead of a fictional character), the show wouldn't have been rated G.

Television is that dream place where pathetic guys get beautiful girls. Do you think Ginger or Mary Ann would have spoken to the single men on Gilligan's Island had it not been written in the script?

Penny & Leonard

A nerdy professor, a fat captain, and an accident prone idiot usually do not garner the attention of beautiful women. Maybe Gilligan's Island should have been called, "Dream Island" instead.

But guess what? It's not just retro TV that matches dorks with beauties. Penny dated Leonard on The Big Bang Theory. Don't you love a great fiction story that lets guys dream?

  1. We had the same thought with dreaming, considered writing about Jeannie too :)

  2. Well our youngest daughter is married to a true nerd. She's a real beauty too. She's thin, an ex competitive gymnast, a nurse and a mother of five that can still wear a bikini and no one would ever guess she ever had a baby one in her entire life!

LOL...I tease her all of the time because she is almost 40 now and I still have my baby fat from her. That's not fair...bad dna on my part!:-)

Now back to her husband. He got into Stanford medical on scholarship and is a DR. He taught medicine while at Stanford. He is very short and not cute nor handsome in anyway.

He is currently medical director over the 2nd largest hospital in the state of Maine. He is kind, funny and sweet, but, he is definitely a nerd.

So there's one life example of a sexy little beauty that was attracted to and married a total and complete nerd. Some times I wish I had married a nerd. They tend to be very successful and make lots of money!

Not that I would ever consider marrying for money...nah...not me!

    Have a great day...this was cute! :-)

  3. I'm a huge sucker for "nerds". They can hold down intelligent conversations like nobody's business and for me, that's a much bigger turn on than athleticism or good looks alone.

  4. I never thought of I Dream of Jeannie in a bdsm kind of light. Why the hell did she have to call him "master" all the time? I will never think of it the same again lol.

  5. And Penny is still dating Leonard in BBT. And it looks like Sheldon and Amy are gonna hook up for reals (as in have sex) by the season finale.

Yes...fiction is full of lies. But sometimes a lie is easier to swallow than the truth which can be (no one likes you or finds you interesting).

  6. i had a I Dream of Jeanie wig but it was the brunette.. I used to dream of having powers but I wouldn't let the astronaut tell me that I could not use them.

  7. Mary Ann would have! She was nice!

  8. Made me smile to think back on I Dream of Jeannie and Gilligan's Island! Nice take on the dream topic. :)

  9. I'm married to a nerdy guy and though I'm no beauty, I can see where the attraction to nerds comes from - for one thing, they're not self-obsessed like the great handsome hunks! ;)

  10. Ha - those shows may have highlighted dream social interactions but
now nearly every forensic cop show highlights 'dream' cases that practically
solve themselves with an impossibly brainy protagonist and dutiful sidekick(s)!

  11. We used to get I dream Of Jeannie here in UK when I was a kid although I didn't own a I Dream of Jeanie wig, if I was into that I would have preferred a Ronette wig to wear whilst miming to Be My Baby :-)...oooops! did I just dream that last bit.

Have a fantabulosa week Joyce and sweet dreams ;-)

    1. OH now THAT is HYSTERICAL..how witty the comedian was and SPOT ON!! lolol love your analogy but disagree about the "script" loneliness pairs the oddest couples together!

    2. Thanks to everyone for the comments.

The script put the characters on the island together. If not, Gilligan would never have those beautiful girls in bikinis leaning into him and touching his shoulders like he was their stud muffin.

    3. What a fun post, Joyce. Love your humour. How nostalgic reminiscing about those shows. I love nerds and love to write them into my romance stories. They're so much fun and deserve to get the girls more than the arrogant too handsome types who think girls should just fall at their feet.

  12. I so love Penny and Leonard! They are just the perfect pair... shows us that dreams, impossible they may seem as this couple (fiction perhaps), can come true.

  13. I haven't seen The Big Bang Theory, but you're right, there's a lot of that stuff going around and it extends to Hollywood too. Would poor Peter Parker really have gotten the girl over rich friend Harry Osborne? I'm thinking...maybe, but probably not.

  14. Well to some dorks credit my hubs is kind of one and I'm pretty hot so it does happen in real life but that GoDaddy geek/model commercial was GROSS.

  15. Interesting to see your mind weave this one! While we are on the subject, what would life be like without dreams for us to hold on to and wish they would come true!

  16. I think if I dream of Jeanie were made today, it wouldn't be G rated. Even worse if it were made in New Zealand, where it seems there are fewer rules for what is allowed on TV.

  17. Ah, I Dream of Jeannie brings back memories!!! I watched that when I was a kid - didn't really understand the sexual innuendos. I just loved seeing Jeannie in the bottle! Then our parents banned us from watching the series 'cos our parish priest rated it as family-UNfriendly!

  18. Agreed - about the commercial.
    Fun post!
Always thought it was odd that Jeannie had no navel. (TV trivia)

  19. I loved I Dream of Jeannie and Gilligan's Island growing up. Major Nelson was hot:))

  20. I think that Dream of Jeannie and Gilligan's Island were very popular shows for sure. I never got to really watch them much growing up (TV was not an active part of my childhood.)

I also have to agree that the nerds don't normally get the beautiful girl in real life. However, I do see that changing a lot lately.

  21. so basically TV is so nerdy guys can pretend that one day they will get a cool girl...

  22. My answer to your question at the end would be, yes. I like the part about television being a place for nerdy guys to dream. But like Crystal says, beautiful girls are seeing beyond the nerd, which gives us some hope! Thanks for sharing.

  23. We have entered the Year of the Nerd! Interesting perspective about the relation of those shows. I loved those shows.

  26. I dream of Jeannie! Wow, that takes me way back. Hey, Nerds and geeks are sexy and interesting...I can see why they might get the pretty girl!

  27. I hope that the unbelievability of these shows is changing. I mean it does seem to me several of the smart and gorgeous girls in our family have been dating some pretty nerdy type guys. II always think, " Thank you, Bill Gates" when I see that,

    Great take, as usual.
