Critical Reading

A successful author should be able to control what one gains from reading his or her story, but what if  the meaning on the page is unclear? Voila! Here you have two critical reading stories which are perfect for group discussions and, that often sought after, accountable talk. Although the stories have a strong plot, the message is purposely written in a vague manner to trigger different interpretations.

In "The Fog," Taylor leaves work only to hit something in the road . . . or does he? Perhaps, Taylor is not a he at all. Students are asked to answer questions after the story with a True, False, or Can't Tell. Next, the students debate the answer.

"The Fog" may be used with multiple grades. Although I originally wrote it for fifth graders, I had a blast listening to the discussion from a high school group. They took my little story to an entirely new level.

This would be a great activity once the textbooks are collected. Critical reading stories sell for $1.25.

If "The Fog" is a bit too advanced for your students, here is another critical thinking story about a ride failing at Disney. "A Day at Disney" works well with your bright primary students as well as elementary kids. It is also a gateway for accountable talk

Happy Birthday to Judy!

Today is my little girl's 25th birthday. As I mentioned before, she wants donations to this cool charity for her birthday. https://www.crowdrise.com/helpjudymakeadifference/fundraiser/judylansky is the link to support five schools in Israel, which enroll kids of warring cultures to teach them how to get along and build strong friendships. This is a great way to heal the world as Arabs and Jews build lifelong friendships and understanding.

It's hard to believe my girl is 25 years old.

She was such a cute baby!

Who grew into a beautiful young woman.

She graduated college with degrees in History and Jewish Studies.

Judy starts a new job in Detroit come Monday.

Happy Birthday to my Special Quarter of a Century Woman!

Here's a song by the Mowglis, which is also the name of her love!

Logic Problems to Last the School Year

Logic problems are a fun way to keep kids engaged year round. My store is packed with these that may be purchased for a dollar a piece or in bulk for a discounted price. Why not plan ahead and take care of all the holidays at once with one of my logic problems to last the year packets.

This original packet was made to challenge students in third through sixth grades, but some of these problems are tough and most likely would meet the needs of older students in the regular classroom.

The booklet contains twelve logic problems from the first day of school until the Tired Teachers at the end. Along the way, students will tackle challenges centered around Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas (2), Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, April Fools Day, Easter, and Mother's Day. Right now it's set at a reduced price of $8.75, so please check it out.   https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Logic-Problems-to-Last-the-School-Year-IG-1264788

If you teach younger kids, no worries, I have the materials for your kids, too, with Logic Problems to Last the Year (Book II) for grades 1 - 3. This mini version of the original book contains six logic problems surrounding the holidays of Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, and our American Independence Day. These matrix logic problems contain one grid to challenge our bright younger students, but once again, they could also challenge an older child in the regular classroom. Book II sells for the reduced price of only $3.95.

If you like logic or any activities to challenge bright students, please check out my store at:

Please Help Judy Make A Difference

A message from my daughter.

JUDY LANSKY'S FUNDRAISER:

HELP JUDY MAKE A DIFFERENCE

FOR HAND IN HAND ON HER 25TH

Judy's Photo

THE STORY:

Hi Everyone,

In honor of my 25th birthday on June 21st, I believe that even
better than presents and Facebook love would be if all my
friends and family donated to a non-profit organization
that I believe is doing amazing and necessary work in Israel.

Hand in Hand, the Center for Jewish-Arab Education in
Israel, "brings together thousands of Jews and Arabs in five
schools and communities throughout Israel:  In Jerusalem.
In the Galilee. In Wadi Ara. In Jaffa. In Haifa. [They] are
proving on a daily basis the viability of inclusion and equality
for citizens of Israel."

I first learned about Hand in Hand this winter when the CEO
came to visit Ann Arbor, MI and I was fortunate enough to
hear him speak. These schools bring together Israeli Jews,
Arab Muslims, and Arab Christians to learn together from
kindergarten until 12th grade. I believe that the best way for
Israel to have peace in the future is through educating the
youth to love and understand each other. These schools do
just that and demonstrate that when you grow up and truly
know someone different than yourself it is harder to see
them as the enemy. This is not to say that the communities
do not struggle and disagree on issues, rather, that they
are willing to have peaceful dialogue and recognize that
friendship and community can trump the hate and violence.

I encourage everyone to check out more about Hand in Hand
at their website and with this video. If you have any
questions, or would like to hear more about this cause, I
would be happy to tell you more about it in my own words.

I personally want to donate $25 for my 25th birthday and
an additional 25 cents for every individual who donates to
this cause! Please help me do something meaningful as I
reach a quarter of a century years old! Thank you for all the
love and for being a part of my life in the past 25 years.

Lots of Love,
Judy

Note: The organization says Project Harmony, which is a
part of Hand in Hand but crowdrise assured me that Hand
in Hand would be able to use the money however they
wished.
