Back in Town

I've had a busy week of traveling and entertaining my family. I arrived back in Memphis early this afternoon and am going to post one song on what I need to do to chill.

How to Solve Logic Puzzles

After thirty years of teaching gifted and talented students, logic was one of my kids' most popular activities. They really seemed to enjoy the challenge! If you've never done it, it's not tough to get started. Once kids know how to fill out a grid, it's a print and go activity.

gifted and talented, bright kids

No matter how old the child, if they've never solved a logic problem, I start them with a basic puzzle, like above. I'll treat the rows of the grid as ownership. For example, Aundrea owns all of the boxes next to her name; however, ownership is shared with the colors. Blue owns all of the boxes in the column below the word.

Next, I'll point to different boxes and ask, "Who owns this one?" Once the kids understand how the grid works, we move on to the symbols.

I will ask a child, "When you make a mistake on a paper, how does your teacher let you know something is wrong?" I am looking for the idea of an /X/ to show incorrect. Once that is understood, I introduce /O/ to show that something is right.

We will then work a puzzle together.

If your student is an older child, you'll need to challenge him or her with a multi-grid puzzle. These work just as the basic grids, except students are solving three puzzles at once. Also, kids will need to look at the other grids to solve the one they are working on. I call this feeding off of the grid.

Sometimes, I will use side notes to help organize my thoughts, too.

logic instruction, how to logic

Once your kids get the hang of it, logic puzzles make for great centers, work for early finishers, or just a fun and challenging reward for the students. Logic puzzles involve higher level / critical thinking skills and may be worked independently or in cooperative groups. Also, we all know the boy or girl in class who is brilliant, finishes everything early, and constantly needs something to do. Here you go!

If you'd like to give logic a try, the samples I used are from FREE products that can be downloaded at Catch My Products. Here are the links:

If you decide to use these logic puzzles,
I would greatly appreciate feedback.

Music of South Pacific

A week ago Thursday, my husband, son, mother-in-law and I went to see the sold out production of South Pacific at Theatre Memphis. The show was so good that I volunteered to be an usher and went again last Thursday! I had worked the set for this musical when we put it on in high school so have just about memorized the words to all of the songs. After all, I heard my classmates rehearse daily. I love the spunk of Bloody Mary and Billis, and the Leutellant of this cast really was a saxxy man. I've also watched and rewatched the movie with Mitzi Gainer. So sit back and venture off to the South Pacific.

Next up is the song I've had stuck in my head all weekend.
And Mandy Patinkin sings it so well.

South Pacific has so many lively songs. Check this one out.

Here's another fun one.

And although I'm normally not one to post more than three songs,
I have to post this favorite of mine before I go.

Oh, heck. One more. I love this song, too, but it's certainly not the last song I love from South Pacific. Just the last one I'm posting.

So if you haven't seen this musical, it's a must!

Adding Covers - Catch My Products

Back when I started on TpT in 2013, there was a lot I didn't know about product design. Although I have posted 574 products, which is more than anyone in the state of Tennessee, many of my products are still lacking the basics . . . a cover, copyright, or links to other products. As a result, I've been working feverishly all summer to get these products revised. I'm down to my last 25 or so. This is huge compared to where I started! Plus, when I say "revised," I'm just talking about clothing the naked products. There are many old products with covers that still need work.

I retired from teaching about a month ago, yet see myself with a full work load ahead. Check out a small sampling of my newest creations and/ or revisions since school let out. Also, please stop by.

Judy, Judy, Judy

June 21st, is my beautiful daughter's 27th birthday! I can't believe she is that dang old. I guess that makes me ancient.

She is NOT the one in the middle but is posed with her boyfriend, Alex. Remind me to post the how-they-met story, one day.

Here's another photo of Judy and Alex--from when they were 15!

Judy has always been a cute girl. Here is proof.

I hope she finds today to be amazing! Happy Birthday, Baby. Here's one more clip.

#MMMM Wonderful Places!

Musical Monday is all about songs with places in their titles. I would love to travel to these places this summer, but whoa is me, I'm not going to any beaches or mountains.

This song is in honor of my daughter Erica who is spending a good part of her summer in the Colorado Rockies. I wish I could join her!

In honor of Erica, I will also feature her beautiful clipart. She is quite talented and even bakes adorable and delicious cakes. Here's the one she made for Cinco De Mayo. If anyone lives in Atlanta, she will be moving there and needs some buyers for her cakes.

I love her movie clip art, too!

#MMMM: Sibling's Day

I know I've posted this video before but when the topic is "Sibling's Day", there is none better. I am fortunate enough to have one big bother and two older sisters. My family is so cool that I couldn't help but follow them wherever they went. I remember this song coming on the radio while my sister gave me dirty looks. Too bad. She's stuck with me! Here is Sweet.

I followed my sister so much, that I even attended DEPO, which was the high school dance! I remember one of her guy friends getting on his knees to dance with me. I'm not sure what song we danced to, but DEPO always makes me think of Peter Frampton, so here he is. On another note, one of my son's friends is a neighbor of Frampton's, in Nashville. Old man Frampton has lost his beautiful long hair, but he still is a legacy, at least in my mind! I love the Moog Synthesizer.

Happy birthday to Mary's brother!
My oldest sister also has a June birthday.
She will be XX on June 18th.
Hint: She's six and a half years older than me,
so DANG, she's old.
Happy Birthday, Barbie!
