#GBE2: Ownership

This week's GBE2 topic is ownership which is perfect for me because I just got my Mother's Day gift last week. I dumped my dumb phone for a smart one.

Not Your Grandma's Phone
Here's the screen of my phone. Aren't my fall background leaves pretty? Notice the 41 unread email messages? I can't fix that problem because as soon as I delete them fifty more old emails pop up as unread. I had over 5,000 messages on my computer. Now I'm down to, 3,289. That's progress!

As I'm learning, there's a lot involved in working a smart phone. In fact, last Saturday I attended a "How to Use Your iPhone 4" class at the Verizon store. Sorry but, no S in my phone. The S dials numbers through voice commands; so in other words, when one says to a friend, "I call my boss Butterball when he's not around," suddenly Mr. Butterball is on your cell listening to you trash him because you said, "call my boss."

Pretty Duct Tape
Anyway, when I drove up for class, "Smart Phones for Dummies,"us old ladies waited in the parking lot for the kids to teach us how to use the almost latest technology. One woman shared her experiences with her first phone. She did everything she was told to do, but the phone still wouldn't work. Finally she learned she had to push a button called "Send."

I'm a step ahead of her because I know how to hit the send button. Not only that, but I can turn my phone on, off, mute it, answer incoming calls, and even take pictures. After my class, I took a picture of duct tape at Target and sent it to my daughter to see if she wanted any. She never responded, so her loss. Unless of course she reads her mom's blog.
Cool Camera
I took a photo of my husband at The Olive Garden the other night. It was one of those last minute dinners empty nesters do after the kids move out. Not sure that he knew this one was coming. The photos are much clearer than the ones I used to take on my dumb phone.

I can pull up the internet but can't see anything on the small screen without my reading glasses. As for Facebook, it won't accept my password when I try to sign on. I guess I won't be wasting time away from home.

I even used the cool technology to "face time" with my daughter in Maryland. For those of you who are technologically challenged (like I was last week), that means we spoke through picture phones. How cool is that? You want to be impressed? If it works, I'll be shocked too.  Listen to this!

Next I know, I'll be telling the phone to beam me up! Isn't ownership of cool technology grand?

Ownership of technology is awesome! Although I don't have a fancy phone, I was completely thrilled when I got my MacBook pro :)

Enjoy your new toy! :D

I love my iphone 4! You know you can place two fingers on the screen and separate them to make things bigger. The girls took a "missing manual" out of the library for me to learn the tricks. Skype me and I will show you some cool short cuts.

Me again, I keep forgetting to tell you how much I like the new simplier theme. I especially like not having the security word. thanks :)

This was great! I need to take an "Android for Dummies" class! I am definitely not utilizing my smart phone to its full potential...I keep meaning to get that manual out... :)

I still have a dumb phone. What's worse? My mother has a smart phone that she likes to torture me with.

Enjoy your smart phone. I just didn't know there were dumb phones. Bwahahahahahaha. Dumb operators (that would be me), but not dumb phones.

Have a terrific day. :)

Thanks for all the comments.

I just got rid of my dumb phone that did nothing. Plus it would constantly cut off my conversations and took poor quality pictures that never got where I tried to send them. I hated that dumb phone!

I wish my kids were around to show me the ropes.

Every time we see another piece of new technology I am always impressed. The other day on the TV here in England they showed some school children that had invented a bracelet that could be worn by people with illnesses or elderly people ... it had an alarm on it which automatically called for an ambulance should they collapse and a reader that could be inserted into a computer that contained all their medical records and medicines that they were on. I thought to myself - why hasn't this been invented before?
I can imagine how excited you must be with your smart phone .... enjoy it! :)

I love techy toys and I am sore tempted to get a smart phone, but the fact is that I'm retired, at home almost all the time, and hardly ever use my dumb phone anyway. But.....I WANT.... We will see...

Sounds like your having fun with your new smartphone, It took me ages to get used to my BlackBerry too many settings for my liking but I'm getting there even though Its' been a year LOL.

You will be a professional smartphone user in a months time :-)

Dear Joyce, I am comforted that I am in good company with you ladies. I thought I must be technologically challenged. My daughter has been teaching me how to use my phone. When I am out and trying to use it on my own I sometimes feel so silly trying to get it to work. I should take one of these classes. Have a beautiful and blessed day. Catherine xo

I love the new technologies. I have the same wallpaper on my smartphone (Sprint), but right now my phone doesn't work because the battery that it came with is registering as a "non-compatible" battery and refuses to charge. Lovely. As soon as I have a chance, I have to go to the Sprint store and find out what's wrong. Maybe I'll get another smartphone to replace it (not just a new battery).

Love this honest and excited post! I also love my smart phone, Droid. Droid knows a lot of things I don't know and now (about 18 months in) I am smart enough to know that it is totally outdated! Can hardly wait for the time to be up and I get a NEW smarter phone. It makes me happy to play with new techy toys.

The hubs and I were just saying the other day that we're living in a Jetson's world, minus the individual spaceship thingies.

This made me laugh. I had a Blackberry for 4 years (maybe more) and loved it. It was hard to give it up, and learn the new iPhone. But I live with a teenage boy and an 8-year-old, so if I can't do something, I give it to them and they fix it. I can usually work it out but it's nice to have live-in backup. :D

hahaha...well to be honest, it takes a second to get used to every phone. I have the 4S after having an iPhone for years and still can't figure everything out. Once you do though, they're pretty handy.

I'd have to attend about 100 classes to understand a smart phone. I can't even find the voice messages on my ordinary cellphone!
