Red Ribbon Week

A red ribbon to encourage kids to remain drug free

Red Ribbon Week falls during the last full week of October and has been a tradition since 1988 to teach students about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. This annual tradition is marked by school assemblies, 5K races, bracelets, and other trinkets to remind students about the dangers of using drugs. Most importantly is a pledge which students sign to agree to be drug free!

I was once a sponsor of the Pride Team at our K-8 school. Upper grade Pride students were typically the middle school leaders. They were the kind of kids who could step into an elevator, face the back wall, and have all the other kids follow their stance. They would sing and put on skits to remind all to be drug free. Also, several of these kids attended national Pride meetings.

I used to commemorate Red Ribbon Week with a door design. I would post pictures of witches and ghosts at the top and drugs on the bottom, "Witches and ghosts give me a chill, but DRUGS are really scary!" I would also have my kids sign pledges promising to remain drug free and hang these on the wall. Did this work? With some, maybe even most, but not all, for sadly, I do have a few former students who have died from drug overdose.

To help you teach drug awareness, here is a free product from my store that I hope you will download and leave feedback!

And now, since it's Monday, here are my Monday Music Moves Me songs.
They are all about anti-drug topics, so have a listen to:

Neil Young, "The Needle and The Damage Done"

Next up, Lynyrd Skynyrd, "That Smell"

And finally, here is Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Under the Bridge," about Heroin addiction.

Joyce,

Drug addiction is a serious problem. It touches more lives than any of us realize. It's sad how someone falls victim to chemical dependency and the struggle it is to break free. I'm thankful I never had the desire to experiment with drugs and am glad that I don't like the taste of alcoholic beverages. Life is tough but it's better to face it sober than to shorten one's life or to be a slave to such vises. Good mewsic choices for this theme. Thanks for joining the 4M crew on the dance floor, my friend!

Interesting choice of songs. When my kids were in school they did a drug-abuse education program called DARE. So important to make them aware of the dangers.

I don't know if we have that here, but it's a good idea.

Neil Young, "The Needle and The Damage Done was really a serious tune for many, and a great hit to say the least. WHOA, Girlfriend, you have totally ROCKED the house with this one! Lynyrd Skynyrd, "That Smell" Hubby, use to play that one in the band! I haven't heard that one for a long time! Way ta go! Addiction is a horrible topic, but it's out there for sure! Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Under the Bridge," Good tune for the explanation! First time I saw him with a shirt on! I don't know if you're mixed up with that strike, but I pray it's over very soon! ROCK ON GIRLFRIEND!

I love all of these songs, but drugs are sooooo bad. I'm glad to hear the anti-drug messages.

There was someone very close to me who became addicted to a prescription drug in his later years. We thought he had kicked the habit but when he died and family cleaned out his room in assisted living, we found that wasn't true. This was at a time when addiction was considered a failing. Heartbreak. When I hear "Under the Bridge" I am transported, to both a good place and a bad one. To listen to lyrics that were never meant to see the light of day, hidden away, and finally released as a song...all those in our country and around the world taken by the scourge of drugs. None of us are immune, as all these songs sing about. Thank you for this theme. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

Drugs are so bad - my sister and her daughter followed that terrible path. My sister keeps trying to stay clean and sober, but her daughter seems to have no interest in leaving that world behind, sadly. They are the reason I never even had any urge to experiment - no thank you! Great song choices!
