When I was a little girl, my friends and I would often build mini safe havens in the den. We'd place chairs, TV trays, ottomans or anything else we could find at odd angles and then cover them with blankets to make a mini burrow that we'd crawl through. Next, feeling as if we were in our own private place, we'd play inside the blanketed house. It was great as long as no one farted. ;-)
I don't remember my kids doing this (I'm talking about building tent houses, not farting). In fact, the only time I'd ever seen a blanketed safe haven, other than mine, was in the movie Sixth Sense when Haley Joel Osment tried to escape his ghostly visitors. Ironically, he never felt as safe in his safe haven as we did in ours. Maybe ghosts had filled our blanketed hutch too, but would this be a bad thing? After all, without a body, one cannot pass gas. I would think it would be a blessing to be with ghosts and here's a second reason why.
Friday night, my husband and I enjoyed a community dinner in a sukkah. The story behind the sukkah is that anyone from the past is invited to join us there. With the rabbi's nudging, several guests mentioned who they'd like to invite to dinner. First I wanted to invite my parents, but I also would have enjoyed dinner with Gilda Radner in her Roseanna Roseanna Dana get up. I always liked comical ghosts instead of spooky ones. My parents were also quite funny, so they would have fit right in with Gilda in this sukkah safe haven complete with ghosts. What could be safer than a homemade structure with lost loved ones?

My grand daughters used to do this when they came to visit, but I haven't seen an abandoned tent downstairs in quite some time! Maybe one of your invited guests paid a call on them once. I'll have to ask. Loved it. ;)

My kids love to make those tents and it drives their dad crazy. He is a total neat freak and can't stand it. To him, it just looks like clutter.
Our rabbi had a sukkah party this year but my son was too shy to go. My sister and I made tents ALL THE TIME as kids and we turned every closet in the house into a "clubhouse."
My parents didn't mind the tent, but thy didn't appreciate the roasting marshmallows on a campfire in the basement.
We used to make forts a lot. I'm trying to train up my son to do it too, but he likes to take them down more than put them up!
My kids loved to make forts the same way. Don't remember them complaining about the farts though :)
I did this and then did it with my toddler son 16 years ago. No luck with my nephews these days, they prefer the iPhone games.
It was great as long as no one farted.

I did this as well - and because I was the 5th of 6 children, I made space for myself in a large storage closet too. I slept in there for months and my mom never seemed to mind. Thanks for opening some memories.
We made those tents too, as kids. My kids did the same and now my grandkids do it.
I'd LOVE to spend a little time in a homemade blanketed retreat with a few of my missed nearest and dearest. What a lovely thought.

I don't know why I never thought to encourage our kids to do this. You think they'd still go for it at 23, 21, and 18?
I loved making the tent hideaways when I was a kid. I was just thinking how much fun it might be to make myself a tent just one last time. But then I thought about how hard it is to get up and down from the floor with creaky old bones and stiff muscles. Sooo.... I think I'll leave that little experience in my distant memories....

The Sukkah made of straw and twigs, provides spiritual warmth but like any roof is only temporary..a reminder, its what's in your heart that is safe!

My kids call their blanketed houses "Forts"--ha ha-- "NO FARTS IN THE FORT!!" I just thought of that. They love them!! I played in them as a kid in the cold winter months--and I played in tree houses in the warm summer months. They are always so much fun.

I built them when I was a kid and my niece builds them all the time even if she has a real tent that can fit in the living room.
I never got to watch the Sixth Sense...my friend ruined it for me by saying that she couldn't even do the laundry alone after seeing it and I need clean clothes for grunge does not work for me, so I opted not to watch it.

wow we built a Sukkah and hung fruits (plastic) and then the childrens pics from church school. They drew pics of "comforting" places things and people. WOW but never knew the Jewish heritage; inviting the "past" and then got a vision of my dad in my heart. WOW your funny story is making me cry. Pastor encouraged us all to go under the covering explaining it was a resting place where Gods presence dwells. Humm..yes the promise of protection of Heaven on Earth. ((hugs)) loved your funny story..yes even the fart part :0)
