Also, if you are looking for a good read for the end of the school year or over the summer, check out my EBook Novel, Mrs. Zimmerman's Donuts. This delightful novel takes a look at a problem plaguing our classrooms, bullying.

Every Friday after school, Harrison Zimmerman invited popular boys over for a stupid end-of-the-week celebration. His mom would fry up homemade donuts dipped in thick chocolate sauce. My mouth watered as we passed his house and I breathed in the scent of those gooey pieces of dough.

Mom usually fell into a tantrum at the thought of me swallowing anything slightly junky. She fussed over eating healthy as if my gut would explode if the tiniest bit of sugar or grease tickled my insides. But the real reason I’d never eaten the donuts: Harrison had never invited me. Actually, no one had ever asked me to go anywhere.

     Things were about to change.

FREE Anti-Bullying Resource

When I needed a resource to handle bullying behaviors, I found two categories of products:

  • Babyish resources for primary grades
  • Bullying in which someone commits suicide

Free social story about bullying in upper elementary school. #TEACHers #antibullying #teachersfollowteachers

This is NOT what I wanted, but all I could find; so, I wrote my own reading passage. My resource is about gateway behaviors to bullying. These are the common behaviors that lead to bullying but are questionable as to whether or not someone is actually being bullied. The purpose of my product is to nip bullying before it starts. Miriam's Story is organized so that the teacher discusses behaviors as they happen in the reading.

High School Reading Passages and Questions The History of Pandemics & COVID

As these difficult times surround us, many wonder how our pandemic compares to those that our ancestors suffered with throughout history. Being a curious sort, I researched and wrote this reading passage with higher level thinking questions about COVID and other pandemics.

My thoughts of the past pandemics actually surfaced when I was a Historical Haunts tour guide. I told stories of Yellow Fever and how Spanish Flu killed Elliot Fountaine, a local spirit who has been seen and heard from during multiple investigations. Little did I know, Spanish Flu did not originate in Spain but rather in Kansas!

If you'd like to learn and teach your high schoolers about pandemics, check out this popular reading passage.

Teens will love reading about diseases throughout history with these reading stories on Teachers Pay Teachers for schools first. #education #teachers #iteachtoo
Also, read what a buyer had to say.

"I used this as an activity when our school suddenly went to distance learning during quarantine. It was phenomenal. In fact it was so well done that I bridged a research paper from this activity as well. It was such a relief to have a relevant and well-made activity readily available at such a critical time. The author did a great job at compiling information and making thought-provoking and worthwhile questions. Seriously, thank you!!!"

Teach about yellow fever with history fiction passage about yellow fever. #TpT #teachersfollowteachers #iteach
I also have a historical fiction story on Yellow Fever for younger students in middle school or upper elementary.

Kids will love reading about George as he tries not to interact with the world around him during the fatal yellow fever epidemic of 1878. This passage also includes questions and a puzzle.

Thanks for reading about these resources! I have also written a high school passage about the Smallpox pandemic. I hope you'll have a closer look at my products.

My Love of Writing!

I love to write, especially historical fiction pieces because I have fun learning about the past. I've recently gotten hooked on "Outlander," a Netflix show that features scenes from the 18th century. It's so much fun to get a look into the past, plus, before watching the show, I never knew anything about Scotland.

As a writer, I not only have created resources with writing tips but also have written a lot of fiction, historical fiction, and nonfiction stories. These stories each contain challenging questions which make for a great buy on Teachers Pay Teachers. All of my stories are my original writing, no purchasing of a story from someone else. I'd often wondered where these resources with writing came from only to learn that a lot of sellers hire someone to write. Not me!

Here is a peek of some of my reading passages for upper elementary or middle school students.

Since it's March, this might be a good time to look at my Irish stories.

4th grade, 5th grade reading comprehension passage with questions on Teachers Pay Teachers. Core standards based curriculum instruction for schools first. #tpt #teachersofig #iteachtoo
Take a look at young Frank, an Irish potato farmer, from around 1850, as he struggles with his new life in the Bronx of New York City.

Although Frank is fictional, a lot of his troubles were real for the Irish immigrant of his time. Frank faces, disease and ridicule as he searches for an honest days work.

St. Patrick's Day article about Irish Castles on Teacher Pay Teachers. #education #teachersfollowteachers #teacherslife

My other story with Irish roots, "A Bloody Bad Life," comes from my experiences visiting a 15th century castle in Ireland. My husband and I took a tour, which inspired me to write this second person story that has been improved by my online teacher/author April Lurie when I took a writing class.

Fun Logic for Kids

When I taught gifted and talented kids, a favorite was always logic puzzles, especially on fun topics like magic. Kids love solving puzzles whether working by themselves or with a partner. These puzzles worked well in centers for early finishers, too. Somehow the bright kids in the class tend to finish early and are always looking for something to do. Of course, many of those bookworms will pull out a novel and read, but the math kids want to solve logic puzzles. Let's face it. They all love to solve logic puzzles.

A favorite are the grid puzzles, where students answer questions and place X's and O's in a grid. No these aren't hugs and kisses. The X's eliminate possibilities while the O's match what goes together. Would you like to try them out?

I have a lot of FREE puzzles on different grade levels. Try these:

Six Sentence Stories A Bit Off From the Rodeo

My Beautiful Daughter

After my last week's gruesome six for Girlie on the Edge's Blog's Six Sentence Stories, I'm here to redeem myself with a short comedy sketch mirrored after one of my favorite comedians, Gilda Radner. If you're old, like me, you'll remember how, as Roseanne Roseannadana, she never got her commentaries just right! I hope this makes you laugh out loud and brings back fond memories of the old Saturday Night Live.

Here is my original comedy sketch that I wrote in her memory.

๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚

A Bit Off From the Rodeo!

"Dear Roseanne Roseannadanna,
     S. Mack Bangdrum writes in today wanting to know where the rodeo will be, if he is allowed to wear a bikini to it, pass gas in the stands, burp, smoke, and if smoking leads to a fire, will clowns be available to put it out?"

"Dear S. Mack Bangdrum, sounds like a fun guy,
I, Roseanne Roseannadanna, once saw a clown trying to get stuck smoked jerky out of his teeth while listening to country music coming out of a radio near a fireplace. Sticky food scraps get in their so tight that a rock song would have been better to get the energy to pick, pick, pick at old gunk for a good cleaning. Way back when, Franklin Delano Roosevelt used the radio to give his fireside chats to the nation, but I could never listen to the president with my finger picking my teeth, making drool slide out of my mouth, in front of a president, no less!"

"Roseanne, Roseanne Roseannadanna, since Mr. Bangdrum wrote in wanting to know about the rodeo, why are you rambling on about picking your teeth in front of a radio broadcast from a president who died in 1945?"

     "Bitch."

๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚

Find humor in my Novel or eBook social story on TpT.

Are you wondering if I have funny stories in my store? The one that stands out the most is my middle grade novel, Mrs. Zimmerman's Donuts. This 203 page manuscript takes readers on an adventure with Knob and Slater as they work to stop the bullies.

Although it’s been four years since Will lost his brother, he still finds himself smothered in the arms of his overprotective mom. To make matters worse, fifth grade means day after day of taunting by a group of boys who share weekly donuts without him. Life changes when a Mohawk wearing cool kid enters the class, assigns Will a new name, and is determined to give him a hand up the social ladder. But social success has its problems as Will soon finds out by following his angel with mismatched wings.

Move Over Ed Guin

This week's six sentence writing prompt is Kaleidoscope and I'm linking up with Denise at Girlie On The Edge Blog, where she hosts Six Sentence Stories. I decided to break away from my usual comedy writing for a horror story that showcases my literary composition skills. As I suspect you know, I own a store that sells products to teach writing to kids, as well as many other resources, such as reading passages with questions. A favorite teen reading passage of mine is about horror movies and Ed Gein. But first, check out this week's gruesome six!

Move Over Ed Gein

He’d read about Ed Gein, the horrific murderer whose crimes became

known from horror, slasher films such as Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Silence of the Lambs. Wearing women as clothing delighted Guin but was not enough for this psychopath whose dreams stirred him into an erotic state with the hopes of outdoing his cold, killer idol. So, with gloves on hand, he smothered the girl with a Strychnine soaked cloth and dragged her limp body into the silent barnyard. A cool breeze brought him shivers as he teetered the ax above his victim’s bare corpse then chopped her into multiple pieces. He’d dry out the remnants, that had once been human, with cups of rice under a heat lamp before sliding her remains between two gigantic glass circles connected to a long tube. His gruesome kaleidoscope would then be complete.

Extremely satisfied
This was a great opportunity to bring in the SLP and have a discussion about the subject area and branch out to what has recently happened with the correct terminology. The students were very interested in the material and asked many questions. Thank you.

Extremely satisfied
This is a very effective resource. So far we worked on the Impeachment articles. They were engaging and sparked deeper looks into further information. I had many opportunities to model active reading. I recommend this resource.
